ABSTRACT

This study outlines the stress factors and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the stress variables among aviation workers, which includes airline employees, flight crews, pilots, maintenance crews, air traffic controllers, airport or ground workers, engineers, training personnel, and other aviation-related personnel. A review was done on 37 research papers using systematic literature review (SLR) and discovered nine stress factors among aviation workers which are working hours, workloads, internal factors, ergonomic issues, job uncertainty, job demands, organizational issues, team conflict, and the COVID-19 itself. The findings of this study could provide insights to employers in the aviation industry for mitigation actions that could help to successfully reduce and eliminate stress factors in the workplace. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

ABSTRACT

Stress such as uncertainty about the future, including the problem of new coronavirus infection, is a very serious problem not only for physical health but also for mental health. It is certain that stress is one of the risk factors for developing mental disorders. We have found stress-responsive biomarker (stress marker) candidates through studies on the process from stress to disease onset. Recently, we have been trying to prove the stress-suppressing effect of aroma with brain factors. We analyzed how aroma affects behavioral changes due to stress and the expression of stress marker candidates in the brain. In this article, the data on aroma that we have accumulated so far will be introduced. Specifically, we will describe changes happened in experimental animals when they smelled coffee beans, lavender, cypress, a-pinene, and thyme linalool. When considering the biological effects of aroma, it is inevitable that not only the olfactory pathway but also odor molecules act through the bloodstream by nasal and transdermal absorption. The brain transferability of odor molecules may be a bottleneck in analyzing the biological effects of volatile components. Thus, we would like to discuss on this issue.

ABSTRACT

In today's competitive and rival world, stress has emerged to be an integral part of every person's life which affects an individual directly or indirectly in many ways. The COVID-19 pandemic even glorified the importance and cruciality of managing stress, anxiety and depression as these created a massive impact on the economy, education, healthcare, business areas and other aspects of society in every possible manner. This study determines to find all the feasible contributing factors to stress, anxiety and depression which influence individuals coming from vivid occupational backgrounds due to personal, work-related, psychological and interpersonal reasons. Our research aims to define and describe the impact of the rise in technology and the COVID-19 pandemic on the stress levels of an individual. It includes variously supervised and unsupervised machine learning algorithms in detecting stress efficiently and effectively among a huge population. The objective of this paper is to make those millions of people aware of the early detection and treatment of stress before it becomes life-threatening to them. The paper finally throws light on how stress-related research will help policymakers in the education field and general industry sector to rebuild the policies on stress and countermeasures to avoid stress.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought unprecedented challenges, with a potential stress which might affect the education of resident doctors in the field of orthopedics and traumatology. Its repercussion on the residents' strain and training routes is not well known. After two years of pandemic, this paper aims to analyze the repercussion of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on education, medical training, and the mental well-being of Romanian resident doctors in orthopedics and traumatology. In January-February 2022, an electronic questionnaire was distributed to all orthopedic resident doctors in the 12 residential training centers in Romania. Participants (n = 236) were resident doctors with an employment contract and professional activity during the COVID-19 pandemic. Resident doctors who did not work during this period were excluded. An online survey generator was used to electronically create the questionnaire. Statistical analysis was performed in Matlab version R2022a, with the support of Statistics and Machine Learning Toolbox Version 12.3. Descriptive statistics were performed for the standardized questions, while for the open questions, answers were collected by topic. The results of the Chi-square test indicate that there is a statistically significant association regarding the prevalence of infection among residents involved in the treatment of patients with COVID-19 (p = 0.028), and the influence of secondment in COVID-19 sections (p = 0.0003). The infection of residents is not related to their affiliation with a particular medical training center (p = 0.608), gender (p = 0.175), the year of study in residency (p = 0.733), the age group (p = 0.178), and the secondment period (p = 0.114). Residents who participated in the study had an overall well-being index of 13.8 ± 5.7, which indicates a low level of well-being for a large number of residents. Residents who would like to choose a new residency specialization, or would choose a non-medical career, had reduced average WHO wellness rates, as the risk of infection is associated with the treatment of patients with COVID-19 and secondment in COVID-19 sections. The findings of this study may help residency training centers to develop robust programs that can alleviate the impact of this pandemic. Some major changes will be needed to be integrated into residency training programs around the world. Emphasis should be placed on electronic educational portfolios, simulation of surgical processes, and distance learning, all of which have a high potential for health and safety, as well as for the moral support of residents.

BACKGROUND: The SARS-CoV­2 pandemic has extensively challenged healthcare systems all over the world. Many elective operations were postponed or cancelled, changing priorities and workflows in surgery departments. AIMS: The primary aim of this cross-sectional study was to assess the workload and psychosocial burden of surgeons and anesthesiologists, working in German hospitals during the first wave of SARS-CoV­2 infections in 2020. METHODS: Quantitative online survey on the workplace situation including psychosocial and work-related stress factors among resident and board-certified surgeons and anesthesiologists. Physicians in German hospitals across all levels of healthcare were contacted via departments, professional associations and social media posts. RESULTS: Among 154 total study participants, 54% of respondents stated a lack of personal protective equipment in their own wards and 56% reported increased staff shortages since the onset of the pandemic. While routine practice was reported as fully resumed in 71% of surgery departments at the time of the survey, work-related dissatisfaction among responding surgeons and anesthesiologists increased from 24% before the pandemic to 36% after the first wave of infections. As a countermeasure, 94% of participants deemed the establishment of action plans to increase pandemic preparedness and strengthening German public health systems a useful measure to respond to current challenges. CONCLUSION: The aftermath of the first wave of SARS-CoV­2 infections in Germany has left the surgical staff strained, despite temporarily decreased workloads. Overall, a critical review of the altered conditions is indispensable to identify and promote effective solutions and prudent action plans required to address imminent challenges.

ABSTRACT

COVID-19 pandemic has affected numerous conditions in nurses' jobs, which led to stress. Stress in neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) nurses is different from other units due to neonates' fragility. This study aims to identify the perceived effect of the COVID-19 pandemic in NICU nurses' stress levels and its related factors. This cross-sectional study took place in Hasan Sadikin General Hospital Bandung, Indonesia, in October - December 2020, involving 23 NICU nurses. Subjects filled in the online questionnaires for three different time frames: before the pandemic, at the onset of the pandemic, and in the new normal era. Data were analyzed using Friedman test, post hoc Wilcoxon test, and Bonferroni correction. There was significant difference in nurses' stress before the pandemic, at the onset of the pandemic, and in the new normal era. The stress increased at the onset of the pandemic and then decreased in the new normal era. The COVID-19 pandemic increased stress level and affected workloads, work-safety, interpersonal relationships, family problems, and economic problems. With these findings, we recommend the hospital management do a regular stress screening on NICU nurses and refer to the psychiatric department if nurses experience stress.

ABSTRACT

The outbreak of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has bring so many impacts on various aspects including education. Nearly two years into the pandemic, close to half of the world's students, including Malaysia, are still affected by partial or full closures of educational institution. In spite of this, to ensure the continuity of learning, one of the initiatives taken by our government is introducing online distance learning (ODL) as the new platforms of learning. However, undeniably, ODL is so stressful and this situation is obviously non-pleasant, especially for the long-term development of the students. Therefore, a research to find out the most influential factors, which contribute to these stresses has been conducted. In this research, a decision-making tool known as the Fuzzy Analytic Network Process (FANP) has been applied. Five main factors which are time management, environment of studies, resources, family and lecturer's concerns, with additional of twenty-one sub-factors were studied. The percentage value of each factor was calculated using the FANP, which produced the rank for each factor. Results shows that, environment of study dominates the ranks, followed by time management, lecturer's concern, resources and the last one is family's concern. © Content from this work may be used under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 licence.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, psychiatric hospitals all over the world had to adapt their services to the prevailing governmental regulations. As a consequence, home office use and telepsychiatry boomed. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential of home office use, its adoption, and the association of home office use with employees' mental health in a large psychiatric university hospital in Switzerland. METHODS: We obtained and analyzed home office implementation and use data from the psychiatric university hospital's information technology services. We also conducted a cross-sectional web-based survey to assess the employees' attitudes toward the clinic's crisis management during the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020. Part of this web-based survey consisted of questions about home office use between March and June 2020, attitudes toward home office implementation, and mental health. Three mental health measures assessed depressive symptoms (Patient Health Questionnaire [PHQ]-2), anxiety (General Anxiety Disorder [GAD]-2), and stress factors (stress module of the PHQ-D); a cut-off score ≥3 was used for the PHQ-2 and GAD-2. RESULTS: Of the 200 participating employees, 69 reported that they had worked from home at least partially (34.5%). Home office use differed significantly across professional groups (χ162=72.72, P≤.001, n=200). Employees experienced neither depressive symptoms (mean 0.76, SD 1.14) nor anxiety (mean 0.70, SD 1.03). The employees reported minor psychosocial stressors (mean 2.83, SD 2.92). The number of reported stress factors varied significantly across groups with different levels of home office use (χ42=9.72, P=.04). CONCLUSIONS: In general, home office implementation appears to be feasible for large psychiatric hospitals, however, it is not equally feasible for all professional groups. Professional groups that require personal contact with patients and technical or manual tasks must work onsite. Further evaluation of home office use in psychiatric hospitals up to the development of clinics that function merely online will follow in future research. The situation created by the COVID-19 pandemic served as a stepping stone to promote home office use and should be used to improve employees' work-life balance, to save employers costs and foster other benefits.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: We investigated the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on mental health of professionals working in the intensive care unit (ICU) according to the intensity of the epidemic in France. METHODS: This cross-sectional survey was conducted in 77 French hospitals from April 22 to May 13 2020. All ICU frontline healthcare workers were eligible. The primary endpoint was the mental health, assessed using the 12-item General Health Questionnaire. Sources of stress during the crisis were assessed using the Perceived Stressors in Intensive Care Units (PS-ICU) scale. Epidemic intensity was defined as high or low for each region based on publicly available data from Santé Publique France. Effects were assessed using linear mixed models, moderation and mediation analyses. RESULTS: In total, 2643 health professionals participated; 64.36% in high-intensity zones. Professionals in areas with greater epidemic intensity were at higher risk of mental health issues (p < 0.001), and higher levels of overall perceived stress (p < 0.001), compared to low-intensity zones. Factors associated with higher overall perceived stress were female sex (B = 0.13; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.08-0.17), having a relative at risk of COVID-19 (B = 0.14; 95%-CI = 0.09-0.18) and working in high-intensity zones (B = 0.11; 95%-CI = 0.02-0.20). Perceived stress mediated the impact of the crisis context on mental health (B = 0.23, 95%-CI = 0.05, 0.41) and the impact of stress on mental health was moderated by positive thinking, b = - 0.32, 95% CI = - 0.54, - 0.11. CONCLUSION: COVID-19 negatively impacted the mental health of ICU professionals. Professionals working in zones where the epidemic was of high intensity were significantly more affected, with higher levels of perceived stress.
